Fremont Peak Summit Hike

Fremont Peak stands as a prominent landmark above Canon City, and the hike to its summit rewards adventurous visitors with some of the best views in the region. At 7,097 feet, the peak offers 360-degree panoramas that stretch from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to Pikes Peak. The trail covers approximately 3 miles round trip with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain. The lower portions wind through pinyon-juniper woodland, while the upper reaches open up to exposed terrain with increasingly dramatic views. A final scramble over rocks leads to the summit, adding a touch of adventure to the hike. The trail is moderately challenging, suitable for hikers with some experience and reasonable fitness. The rocky summit scramble requires careful footing but is not technical. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. Bring plenty of water, as there is no shade on the upper portions of the trail. Best hiking seasons are spring and fall when temperatures are moderate. Summer hiking is possible but start early to avoid afternoon heat and thunderstorms. Winter hiking is feasible in dry conditions but can be icy. The views are spectacular year-round, with snow-capped peaks visible in winter and spring. Allow 2-3 hours for the round trip, plus time to enjoy the summit views. Sunrise and sunset hikes are particularly rewarding for photographers.
